Large-sized rice toppings and cheap authentic Chinese Cuisine at Sun Wah Restaurant..
Personally, Manila has somewhat scared me. As I see it oftentimes in the news since I was little, I always believed that you are a lot closer to getting robbed or nabbed when you are wandering this city especially when it is late at night. Yet, one thing has always made me go to Manila and that is the great food finds there. I could just remember my very first blog entry in this site, it was about Chinatown.
Anyway, I went back again to Manila to have dinner in my Papa’s all-time favorite restaurant – Sun Wah. Sun-Wah is easy to spot since it has two black pigs guarding its door which the owners regard as lucky according to Feng Shui. I asked if they kill and eat the pigs when they grow and they said, they didn’t. They just cared for them and when they die, they bury them and put new guard pigs by the front door. I think this is not too appetizing. Lol.
Sun Wah Restaurant is popular for their large-sized rice toppings meal which are available at very reasonable prices. For about Php200, you can order their rice toppings and share it with 3 to 4 people. The rice toppings is all you need and the meal is complete! However, if you want to have a taste of their signature Chinese dishes, do so because you won’t be disappointed.
There were 9 of us but since my 3 brothers have very large appetite, it seems like there were 15 of us having dinner. Peace! So, we got 2 servings of Asado Lechon Rice, 2 orders of Broccoli Beef Rice, 1 serving of Fish with Broccoli, and 1 order of Fresh Fried Chicken. After devouring this feast, we were so full and we even had some leftovers that we brought home.
The Asado Lechon Rice was rice topped with soft lechon cutlets with sweet asado sarsa (sauce).
The Broccoli Beef Rice is a rice topping dish with chewy beef pieces and crunchy broccoli flowers in savory sauce.
Again, as I am a fan of fish fillet, I had to try their fish fillet dish and they recommended the Fish with Broccoli. It was good and the broccoli flowers are exceptionally crunchy. If this is the way the cooked broccoli, I bet no one would hate them.
They served the Fresh Fried Chicken last and I didn’t expect it to be like this. It was like buffalo chicken – you know, the buffalo wings but in this case it’s the whole chicken.
We also tried their Black Gulaman. It was a little too sweet for me so we just asked for additional ice shavings to weaken the taste.
Spread some awesome..ness.. ![]()

Across the street is Ambos mundos which is owned by the same family who owns this restaurant. Try their Paella! (they have bigger guard pig)
Saw that too. I’ll try it next time. Paella, favorite mo ‘yun e! Mmmmm..
…and yes that area is scary.
