BonChon Chicken in SM Megamall is a newly opened branch of this “twice fried” fried chicken craze resto. I had to try it out immediately since a lot my friends have been consistently recommending it to me. However, when I tried it out, I wasn’t very amused. Maybe because I was more accustomed to the Max’s-style of fried chicken. Anyway, I will try my best to give an unbiased review of this fastfood resto.
It is obvious that BonChon Chicken mainly sells fried chicken – different cuts, that is. But for people who are looking for something more, BonChon Chicken also has other ala carte meals like Fish Taco, Bulgogi Rice or Bulgogi Wrap. For sides, they have Fries, Kimchi Coleslaw, Pickled Radish, and Calamari. They also have Caesar Salad and Ginger Tofu Salad.
For starters, we had some Fries (Php45). Their thick-cut fries are really good. They tasted like my favorite fries from NY Fries and Dips. The serving was a little unsatisfying though and unfortunately, they don’t have a large size for their fries.
Though BonChon Chicken is popular for its chicken, I chose to be different and got the Fish Ricebox (Php145). It contained 3 strips of of soft and tasty fish fillet.
The Chops Ricebox (Php145) consists of 2 pieces of chicken fillet. The breading for the chops and the fish riceboxes are just the same. It is soy garlic. The other breading that you can choose for your meal is the hot and spicy. I don’t have the courage to try that one out as it is said to be really, really spicy. I might not enjoy the meal. But for people who love spicy food, it is highly recommended and add an extra rice.
The Drumstick Ricebox (1pc-Php95/2pc-Php145) obviously contained drumsticks. You can choose between 1-piece and 2-piece drumsticks.
The ricebox meals comes with Iced Teas. BonChon’s iced tea has an exquisite taste. It’s really good.
The taste of BonChon Chicken is really something new that is why many are easily amused by it. However, up to now, I am still puzzled how a “twice fried” fried chicken became healthy. Well, I hope I get enlightened on this soon. Also, I was a bit disappointed of the food when I discovered that the chicken I had was like 70% breading and just 30% chicken. Honestly, that is not worth it’s price. I think they are using less than what the customers should be getting.
The bottom part is just breading. The thin strip on top is all the chicken. This is what I got for the chops.
