In the Western part of the world, wine appreciation is considered an essential part of dining. This practice is gradually becoming more prevalent in our culinary culture. So, as a foodie, I decided to attend the first of the series of wine appreciation classes held at Enderun Colleges in Taguig City.

The wine appreciation night was led by Gerald Savigny, a very knowledgeable wine connoisseur, who has over 18 years of experience working in distinguished restaurants and hotels all over Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. He isn’t only an expert in wines but he was also able to impart knowledge about wines in the most interesting way possible.

In the Italian Wine Appreciation, we tasted 4 wines from different regions of Italy – 2 white and 2 red wines. As we went along the different regions, we were allowed to taste the wines. We didn’t have to wait until the end of the discussion to taste them.

We were also taught how to expertly swirl the wine glass, identify aromas or “nose the wine”, identify colors, body, and flavors of the wine.

After tasting the first two wines, we were given a 5-minute break to enjoy the bar chow. The finger foods include thin slice of meat, a croquette, chicken wing, and olives and cheese.

The Gavi di Gavi is one of the high quality Italian wines that you can find, a DOCG wine. It is a dry and light-bodied white wine that has a subtle and fruity character.

A favorite of the night among 4 wines tasted is the Montepulciano D’ Abruzzo, a DOC wine. It is a dry, medium to full-bodied red wine with a fruity fragrance. It is smooth and is ready to drink at its release or aged about 3 to 4 years.

If all classes were about learning how to appreciate wines, no one will skip class.

According to the deal, the fee includes Hand-outs, Bar Chow and Wines. There were no hand-outs given but that’s okay because the discussion was really clear. I learned a lot about proper wine tasting and wines from different regions of Italy through this course. I also enjoyed the bar chow and the 4 different wines that we tasted.

Had I known that a wine tasting class will be this awesome, I would have purchased more vouchers so I could’ve participate in all classes. I hope there’ll be more in the future. Of all the classes I have taken from kindergarten until today, the wine tasting class is the most fun!

Spread some awesome..ness.. :D

Looks awesome those glasses and wine as well! I’m big fan of Italian white wine. I don’t know why but I really like white wine more than red wine. Thanks :)
