Sunrise Buckets in Greenhills, San Juan City
Budget : ~Php 145 – 220 per half-pound of wings
Duration : ~1-2 hours
Bummers: Ultimate Crazy Hot Wings is really ultimate crazy hot! You were warned.
If you are searching for the best wings in the metro, you should not miss the different flavors of wings at Sunrise Buckets. I will try to come up with a story where the name came from. Sunrise, maybe because you can stay there until the sun rises. The resto looks like a cool hangout spot to drink beer, gobble chicken wings, and chill with friends. Buckets, possibly because the wings are served in metal buckets. But hey, remember this just came from me.. Ah, should have asked them.
Though I don’t frequent Greenhills area (because I am not a fan of large crowds of people so I frequent Eastwood City and BGC), Sunrise Buckets is not difficult to find. It is a few blocks away from Greenhills Shopping Center – a popular destination for cheap gadgets and apparels. While on the road, you can easily spot the large sign saying “Sunrise Buckets”, so you’ll definitely NOT get lost.
Sunrise Buckets has a cozy atmosphere – providing a relaxing illusion that you are by the beach with ice cold beer in one hand and flavorful chicken wing on the other. It is decorated with lots of colorful surfboards and out front is an area where you can pose riding a wave and quickly snap a photo.
Sunrise Buckets is probably a beer haven to its patrons. It has local and some imported beers. It also has a mean rootbeer they use for their rootbeer float. In the following image, spot which doesn’t belong on the shelf.
Sunrise Buckets’ Rootbeer Float (Php 115) is imported IBC rootbeer poured into a glass of ice and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. This is best paired with those spicy chicken wings.
We wanted to try as many chicken wing flavors as possible. Sunrise Buckets has 3 major categories of wing flavor – Awesome (flavors made for the Filipino palate), Wipeout (flavors inspired from Canada and US), and Cloud 9 (flavors unique to Sunrise Buckets).
We ordered 5 half-pound buckets of chicken wings. We tried the Smokin’ BBQ from the Awesome Wings; Garlic Parmesan, Ultimate Crazy Hot, and Honey Mustard from the Cloud 9 Wings; and the Sunrise Original. A half-pound bucket from Awesome Wings is worth Php 145 while a half-pound order from Cloud 9 Wings costs Php 220. A half-pound from the Wipeout Wings is Php 155.
Don’t dare try the Ultimate Crazy Hot if you have low tolerance for hot and spicy food. It will make you cry. But just for kicks, you may want to experience it even just once. Keep a glass of milk nearby because these wings can ignite fire.
We shared a plateful of Chili Cheese Fries (Solo – Php 99 / To Share – Php 155). It is really cheesy but not that chili so there’s nothing to be scared of this side dish. This is really messy to eat so be prepared to get your hands dirty.
We also split a bucket of Onion Rings (Php 155). The rings are packed with thin slices of onion, which are kind’a sweet. The onion rings came with a mayo dip.
We washed down all the chicken, fries, and onion rings with two pitchers of Sunrise Iced Tea (Php 115). Sunrise iced tea was new for my taste – new but good. We asked what they put on it because it had a fragrant scent but they said it was a secret. So we just all agreed that it was cinnamon.
Just when you taught we didn’t have alcohol during our visit, you are wrong. We did because we tried Jack Daniel’s Burger (Php 295). It is deep-fried chicken breast that is smothered with Jack Daniel’s sauce and sandwiched between two toasted buns. Jack Daniel’s sauce is a sweet whiskey sauce but without the alcohol zing. Now I am not really sure if we had alcohol so you might be right after all. It is served with fries.
Sunrise Buckets was pretty awesome. Since we went there around lunch, it wasn’t really right to start getting drunk but maybe next time we will. So there will be no iced teas and rootbeer floats during that time, only booze.
On another free weekend, see you at Sunrise..
