Black Canyon Coffee in SM Southmall (Giveaway Alert!)
One fateful day, we took a drive down south to check out this new coffee shop called Black Canyon Coffee. Much to my surprise, it is not a simple coffee hangout place but it appeared more like a full-blown restaurant. Serving more than coffee and tea, Black Canyon Coffee has a good selection of Thai food and other dishes from all over the world.

Black Canyon Coffee
The well-lit and colorful resto of Black Canyon Coffee is conveniently located at the Food Street of SM Southmall. Along the line of other coffee shops and restaurants, it stands out due to its lively ambiance, aromatic beverages, and award-winning food fare. Dining here gives you two options, inside its cozy resto or outside al fresco. I think both are comfortable matched perfectly with its comfort food.
On top of the list of its food lineup are the Tom Yum Goong (PhP 230) and Pad Thai (PhP 194). The Tom Yum Goong or Spicy Prawn Soup at Black Canyon Coffee is a recipe that won that Tom Yum Goong Thailand Championship. This sour and spicy soup closely resembles our sinigang but with a Thai twist and instead of using pork, it had large prawns. We really do not have strong tolerance for spicy food so we requested that they tone down its hotness level.

Tom Yum Goong
The Pad Thai or Thai-style Fried Noodle with Prawn at Black Canyon Coffee won at the Pad Thai World Championship. Aside from being a winner, you really would not want to miss this because according to CNN’s World’s 50 Most Delicious Foods, Pad Thai ranked #5. Preecha Athaboh, the resident Thai chef of Black Canyon Coffee, has a brother and he is the one responsible for this highly-acclaimed version of Pad Thai.

It looks like Black Canyon Coffee designed the menu according to my liking because they have Salmon Steak (PhP 292), a dish I would love to see in almost any menu. In fact when I am in Yabu House of Katsu, their salmon katsu is my usual order. Black Canyon Coffee’s Salmon Steak is rich and tender, with all the juicy flavor of the sea packed into the meat. It is perfect especially with fries and salad sides.

Green curry is very popular in Thailand and this flavor was infused into the Black Canyon Coffee food lineup via Green Curry Stir-Fried Rice with Tuna Stuffed in Omelette (PhP 208). Despite being spicy, it gave a distinct taste that I would gladly have every now and then. Aside from its memorable taste, it is presented nicely like a open omelette envelope filled with curry rice.

Another popular Thai dish that we had is the Prawn Cakes (PhP 180). Prawns were ground into pieces and small cakes were created out of it. The sweet and thick sauce sticks well into the Prawn Cakes when dipped.

The Deep-Fried Sesame-Crusted served with Spicy Seafood Sauce (PhP 190) is truly worth a try. The tender fish fillet is golden brown on the outside while remaining juicy on the inside. Its spicy sauce is not for the faint of heart so make sure to have a glass of water nearby when you have this.

We had a taste of four beverages from Black Canyon Coffee. These are the Cha Thai Yen or Thai Iced Tea with Milk (PhP 80), Green Tea Glacier Frappe (PhP 135), Cappuccino (PhP 110), and Mocha Glacier Frappe (PhP 130).

Cha Thai Yen
The Cha Thai Yen is a signature Thai drink. Simply put, it is a milk tea with a dash of Thai flavors. Authentic and refreshing, you should give it a try when you drop by Black Canyon Coffee.

Green Tea Glacier Frappe
Even if you are not really a fan of green tea, the Green Tea Glacier Frappe will change your mind. It tastes like authentic Matcha green tea from Japan. I think a lot of my friends would love this.

Cappuccino
Art on coffee, the Cappuccino definitely shows this. It comes with a serving of Thai biscuit, which is perfect for an afternoon snack. And it has a small glass of Jasmine tea, which they told me to drink after finishing the coffee if you want to wash off the coffee smell.

Mocha Glacier Frappe
The Mocha Glacier Frappe feels like dessert in a glass. Smoothly blended into a thick drink and topped with chocolate ice cream, what’s better than that?

A drink from Paradise… Available on Earth
Would I go back? Oh yeah I would! Check them out too and soon, they will be opening a branch near the metro, at the heart of McKinley Hill. Stay tuned for more info.
